It's not clear what you are going to use the tractor for.
You say you're building two houses - do you need to excavate a full basement or just footings? Are you putting in a septic system? Do you have to trench to pull in the power? Do you need to clear trees and pull in a road or just maintain an existing gravel road? Do you need to plow, finish mow, bush hog, etc? You say you have some existing crops now, how are those being maintained?
If you have a lot of digging to do I think a backhoe on any CUT may take a very long time to do the job. Sometimes you're money ahead to pay a contractor who can do it in a half days time with the right equipment. ....

You didn't say how many hours were on the 4200 you mentioned. A check of 4200s at machinefinder dot com shows them going from $12.5k to $15.9k without a backhoe, so that price you have sounds pretty good as long as it's in good shape and doesn't have more than, say, 500 or so hours on it. Is that a JD frame mounted backhoe? ....

They did have some problems with the initial front axles they used under those tractors. They had a problem with rutting when turning and were only going to change those with mowers. If that tractor is equipped with that axle that might mean a better deal should be made. ....

I would take a close look at the battery and oil cooler. There was an issue with these as well. The battery would leak acid and corrode the oil cooler, battery holddown and cables. There also was an issue with the rockshaft valve, but that may be tough to check out with the backhoe installed. There are programs on both of these issues that deere will pay for, although these programs expire December 1. ....
